STARTING YOUR OWN SELF-MANAGED SUPER FUND

Are you tired of seeing your retirement savings whittled away by fees being paid to faceless Industry or Retail Fund administrators? Do you want to take control of building your own nest egg to fund your future retirement plans? Could a Self-Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF) be for you?

Many Australians are now taking control of their own retirement destinies and setting up their own SMSFs. There were approximately 477,461 SMSFs with 907,036 members in Australia holding almost $439 billion in assets at the end of June 2012.

ACCESSING YOUR SUPERANNUATION BENEFITS AS A PENSION

Did you know that when you reach preservation age you can access your superannuation benefits by way of a Transition to Retirement Income Stream (TRIS).

A TRIS is available to those superannuants that wish to access their benefits but do not intend to fully retire from their current employment. The Transition to Retirement Income Stream gives the member access to up to 10% of their superannuation account balance each year.

If you are aged between 55 and 59 and start a TRIS, the taxable component of the member’s income stream is assessable in their individual income tax return. Once you turn 60 years of age, this income stream is tax-free.

Your preservation age is:

Date of Birth Preservation Age
Before 1 July 1960 55
From 1 July 1960 to 30 June 1961 56
From 1 July 1961 to 30 June 1962 57
From 1 July 1962 to 30 June 1963 58
From 1 July 1963 to 30 June 1964 59
On or after 1 July 1964 60

BORROWING TO GROW YOUR FUND

Did you know that it is possible to borrow between 50 – 80 per cent of the cost to purchase either business real property or new residential property in your Self-Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF)?

The members of the fund are able to enter into a Limited Recourse Borrowing Arrangement (LRBA) via a Property Custodian Trust in order to fund the asset purchase which is then held in trust for the benefit of the SMSF until the loan is extinguished.
